DMW:绝尘美岛 Island Exotica

I think this topic is definitely one that is closest to our hearts..for we all, live, on an island. However, these three islands are really different from city islands as they are without the hustle and bustle and pace of living is really slow and many a times, romantic….

布拉诺岛 Burano

When one visits Italy Venice, like me for instance, was so blown away by Venice itself and so, most of the time was spent walking thru the alleys, scouting for masks and some remaining hours spent in Murano, just to visit the glass factories. What about Burano? What? BURANO??? yes my dear…Burano.. a fairy tale little island that houses rainbow coloured cottages and surface only when the fog lifts…No adjoining houses are painted in the same colour..and you are not allowed to change the facade colour of the house, even if you own it..The reason as to why these houses are so vivdly coloured is because as most of the men folks are fisherman and little Burano is almost always smothered by fog, the womenfolks chosed their own colour so that their husbands can find their way home..sigh..that’s so romantic.

Most people would frown on hanging your laundry out to dry from thy windows but, the natives of the isle takes pride in living according to traditional ways and hanging laundry out itself is a tradition they uphold and interestingly, the way they hang their washings are very artistically done and really decorates the whole picture, making the whole isle even more dreamlike..

IMG_0889

Like Venice, the mode of transportation here is by boat and these canals are their “roads”..

The island of Burano is kind of a small..however, life here is just as colourful as their houses.People here are really warm and friendly, and well, less commercial..half an hour is all it takes to complete a walk around the perimeter of this isle.Perhaps one day, if you were to visit Venice, remember to pay Burano a visit..she will like it..and so will you.

伊德拉岛 Hydra-Greece

IMG_9792

i am an avid fan of Greek mythology..always longing to visit one of the isles where the houses are white and the windows are blue, where the clouds are puffy and the agean sea ever so blue.. and finally at last, i embarked on one of those greek islands and this, is HYDRA !

IMG_1752

As their source of food, other than those that they plant at their backyard, comes from mainland, it is transported via boats and every morning, fishermen would dock at the pier, selling their catch..and cats..are all over the place, ready for a quick meal or just sitting around, basking in the warmth of the sun..

IMG_1805

IMG_1744

IMG_1781

Interestingly, no vehicles are allowed on the island, except the rubbish collector and the only mode of transportation here would be the donkeys..who were, incidentally, the first first to greet you when you reach the island..

IMG_1809

IMG_1794

IMG_1791

Many small restaurants like this one could be found at the centre of the island, amongst other provision shop. Most of them sell very much the local stuff like octopus..greek salad…grilled fish….In fact, their main diet here are more of seafood..understandable..for they are surrounded by the agean sea…

IMG_1833

As it was a working trip, i am unable to satisfy my urge of hopping over to nearby isles such as santorini, myokonos or lesbos..but one day, i will do that..

Time: Summer..Where the sun is ever so hot, the chouds are puffy and the agean ever so blue….

冲绳竹富岛 Okinawa Taketomi

IMG_4395

A picture is worth a thousand words,

a phrase that i have used many times over and yet again, i found this depiction of Okinawa Taketomi so apt that the beautiful rustic life is portrayed vividly here…

IMG_4398

IMG_4267

Ha..this is the mascot of the island..It comes in all shapes and sizes, all different colours and expressions..It sits all over the place but mainly on roofs..It protects the people in the houses, encouraging prosperity and warding off all evils….

IMG_4218

IMG_4257

IMG_4297

IMG_4295

IMG_4230

On this fantastic, rustic island, the mode of transportation would be bicycle ( though they do have cars on the island but it is strictly uses for transporting goods) and getting on the bike and exploring, i chanced upon this eatery that sells deliciously familiar Prawn MEE!!!!!

IMG_4216

Look at this! Amazing..how come they too have prawn mee ya??

IMG_4417

True to being a japanese island, the buildings there are immalculate and pristine..and ever so rustic..

IMG_4459

I wonder if you know that this island boasts one of the best beaches in the world..the sunset there is simply breathtaking..

Being on these three island proves one fundermental point, that is, a simpler life allows more interaction between people and people on these islands are far more friendlier than city folks.

When pursuits are simple , the process is simpler and if we were to be satisfied with a simple life, we will therefore, be happier..

i had the chance of working on an island for 6 months. it got pretty boring sometimes and everything there was so expensive due to demand and supply. however, that break away from city life gave me time to think about who i am, what i am. it brought me back to simplicity. one of the best times ever (except for the work). haha.. :)

Nice to view those lovely photos taken. Nice closeup of the CAT. Good delicious prawn mee (my wife’s favorite). How we wish to take a break from city life and enjoy a good holiday. Need to plan and go together as a family.

Can see that you look happier … That’s good!

    Be blessed,

I headed to greece this easter and took the “flyingleopard/flyingcat” to hydra. Many would recommend Santorini for the best sunset in the world. But we headed to hydra because apparently the view was good too and most importantly, took less travelling time and costs. Did u head for Santorini?

And oh my goodness, the last few photos. they are spectacular. is that an island in japan? Its amazing.

I read your blog occasionally, not often enough to know what’s going on though. seems like you’re traveling a lot? Is this leisure or work, of course if you don’t mind me asking :)

    cheers,

    bryan ,

    Hi Bryan
Noticed you have done many travel destination that are out of the norm. How abt doing one on the Wieliczka Salt Mines in Krakow, Poland – it’s all underground – something out of this world. Google it to see what I mean. Hope to see it on one of your travel shows.
