Home Decor 3 Ep 4 ” INDOCHINE”
A week has passed since the last ep of home decor..I Must say that Marilyn saved the day. However, some commented that i have done one too many painting in this season three and hopes that i will venture into other diy stuffs.Sounds good to me..However, forgive me for this episode of home decor, i drew again… really hope that you guys might be able to understand that circumstances does play a part and i shall try not to paint on walls anymore..
For this week the topic is Indochine which denotes that the decor should echo overtones of country such as vietnam ,thailand, cambodia…Our task is to convert a four room flat into an indochine influenced apartment. And here we go…
When we first step into the flat, we were treated to the sight of a rather empty living room with a set of rather colorful furnitures..
One of the bedrooms were hacked off to make way for the study/lounge area and simply covered by some translucent curtains…
The tv console seems a bit too bare…
and the walls too empty….and so we got to work on the transformation!
The buddha shall be our iconic symbol of Indochine and after visiting the shop we decided to go with Tom Yum flavour ( Thailand…)
Since the living room is really long, we placed a low console to divide the space and having two of the extendable tatami floor mats adds seating capacity to the longish living room..
Dark bamboo blinds were used to cover up the lounge area and the door to the bedroomis painted black with gold thai leaf motifs..
Doing away from the original colourful sofa set, we decided on a wooden three seater thai lounger with thai silk covers together with some colourful silk pillows..still colourful but……..
Was really happy with the selection and now unveiling the highlight of the decor…the buddha painting on the wall…..
Thank you lots to the contestant fred and his wife,a really delightful couple.. for their trust in us and we again had much fun…… with teamwork firmly in place, we triumphed again. We hope you had a good time watching us too…
laugh with me…
Rejoice with me ….

Hi Bryan, although u’re fantastic as usual, but your painting really blew me away. It’s really life-like and by far, I think this was your best work ever. In this episode Mark was pretty good as well and it was quite a close fight between you two. Jia you!

on November 5th, 2007 at 9:35 pm
You have a really deep personality and talented. Its wonderful to see an artiste true to himself. I must comment on your Buddha also, its magnifique.
on November 5th, 2007 at 9:37 pm
Without any biased judgement I feel that you should not set your benchmark as just to beat Mark Lee (because you are way better than Mark Lee), set your standard higher, and compare your work with professional designers. I feel that there are still rooms to improve, but as a full time mediacorp artist, your standard is pretty good. I could not get a close look on your Buddha drawing, but from what I saw, you did it pretty well, but of course on professional stand point, still have room to improve.
You truly impressed me on 05th Nov 07 Home Decor 3, you told your ‘disciple’, “even though, this may not be your house, but it is our responsibilities to do our best and not just tv show standard/cover standard.” I respect that, it is important to be responsible for whatever you do. Very well done Bryan, I love your attitude towards work, you earn my respect.
Before people think that I have no rights to comment on the design, I am a grad in Multimedia, and a dip grad in interior design from NAFA.
on November 5th, 2007 at 9:40 pm
wow!!! Very nice leh!!!
Can tell me how you do the shading for the Buddha? U used the brush? But how to make it blend so well?
on November 5th, 2007 at 9:54 pm
hihi bryan.. keep hearing u say about the buddha today.. realli VERY VERY CHIO!!! y u not gona draw at my place.. haiz haiz.. Cant imagine INDOCHINE ever looking as good as wat u have done.. nice!! aniway, goodluck to us k.. glad we got u to design!!
on November 5th, 2007 at 10:07 pm
bryan is the clear winner tonight, and always!
not saying this just because me is on ur side… just look at the way how u conceptualise ur design since u step into a house, and the process of choosing the right furniture (while explaining the details of each piece in reference to the theme) that already shows u really know ur job, and that is “design”. mark lee, on the other hand, occasionally did come up with presentable works, but sorry to say, he seemed to be just trying his luck to piece things together, and often with the help from props men who are more experience than him in the practical work, and lucky enough, he sometimes got things right. but look at tonight, me was expecting him to at least paint a tree (though maybe uglily), which he promised… but in the end, he couldn’t even go further than drawing a few kindergarten standard sketches..
the process of how bryan go about completing his mission is in itself a winning piece of work/programme already! me think, if u lose in an episode, it is simply just because u lose in not having the same taste as the judges, never because u are not good enough
btw, saw the trailer for dude and the princesses tonight… looking forward to see u in the various handsome looking outfits (like when u did ultimate comedian) wor. too much of just t-shirts and bermudas in home decor and everyday life liao, haha!
on November 5th, 2007 at 10:08 pm
Wow! you won again. Hope you will win in every episode.
Although you drew again but your drawing is always that fantastic. Continue to draw if you need to. Congratulations!!!!!!
on November 5th, 2007 at 10:21 pm

Hi Bryan
Your drawing is simply marvellous! Can you share a bit on how you did it? I am curious to know how you can blend the shadows and highlights into the golden face. It’s very nice.
Today is a good episode for both of you. Both of your designs are nice. If I am the judge, I would have trouble picking a winner. I think the “God” blessed you today! It’s very nice!
on November 5th, 2007 at 10:54 pm

very very impressed with your drawing today..
actually I’m always very impressed
& quite amusing to see you concentrating so hard looking to and fro from the paper to the drawing haha..
on November 5th, 2007 at 11:34 pm
I like your drawing of the Buddha pic… Amazing…
on November 5th, 2007 at 11:42 pm
Hey Bryan,
It’s great that you did it again! Even out the scores like what Mark said. I am really impressed by the buddha drawing. Very different, very real, and peaceful.. maybe due to the smile it has.
On another note, I am even more impressed at how you and Mark managed to slash the price of the furnitures.. Hahahaha.. Well done~
Coming back to the results, I stand by the judges, not because they are professional, not because you are bryan. Personally, I felt that your designs are always great with the colours. This time as usual. As compare to mark’s, you’ve brought out the indochine theme with the use of light and dark colours which does not compromise with daily lifestyle of the contestant. I can’t imagine living in Mark’s design, given that it is totally brown and that will definitely make the house or rather the living room looks real dim and dark. Or maybe its just my personal taste. Ha!
Keep going!
Regards
on November 5th, 2007 at 11:50 pm
I thought the Buddha painting was a portrait you bought from somewhere else. Your drawing skills are simply so awesome. How did you manage to do that?
I’m deeply impressed by your talents. Strive on, Bryan!

Hi Bryan,
。。very relaxed ambience created.
想必屋主一定非常喜欢你的家居室内设计吧?
无论如何,你的摆家"功力"是大家有目共睹的!

…yeah…u won again!!! Next episode will be interesting…hmmm…jia you!!!
on November 6th, 2007 at 1:18 pm
hey me have one more point to add… although u said there were comments that u “have done one too many painting in this season”, we can see that u had been trying out different styles of painting since the last season… the colourful peacock, the pop-art style marilyn monroe, and not forgetting the b/w chinese woman painting (which we somehow nicknamed “lily 小凤凤”), the brush painting of confucius, the oil painting style lotus etc etc…
then, the buddha in this episode must have involved the use of a new style u’ve never done before in home decor (not simply paint with a brush or draw outline then fill-in-the-blanks kind)… perhaps the gradual tone effect and finer details were created with something like air brush or spray paint?
think the producer or editor should have at least shown how u completed the final touches of the painting… (well, not only me and the readers here, some viewers over at the mediacorp forum were also wondering how u did it!) what a shame on them for not being smart enough to identify which elements would interest the viewers and should be included in the programme!
on November 6th, 2007 at 1:21 pm
Hihi Bryan,
Both I & my hubby are hook on Home Decor 1, 2 & now 3. Seriously you are so talented! Especially you can do lots of DIY & drawings & thanks for sharing with us so we can also do simple DIY for our new house too. on November 6th, 2007 at 1:37 pm
Cool, Bryan…u r so talent…. how u draw this fantastic picture and how to draw become blur blur effect? is it using spay paint to spray on it?
It’s really very nice design…… is it possible to ask u help me to design my house? cos i’m getting move in my new house…. (but i think very difficult de lah)
Cos my house in Johor Bahru… HEheheeee…..impossible u will go JB de lah…..
So, wish u have a nice day ya…Gd Luck to u………….

设计得很棒,画得更棒!
(但,这对 Mr.mark Lee 有点不公平.)
这幅画,的确加了很多的的”惊艳”分,如果这是画画比赛,你肯定是佼佼者;
on November 6th, 2007 at 5:34 pm
keke! Grats to you for winning again! Hope you get more wins in future ok? Hmm, i think this week your’s really looks nice, but alittle too much buddha? I was pretty worried that the judges wouldn’t like it because there were too many buddhas. haha. But nevermind, at least they appreciated it. =D Yeap, i also thought that there has been too much painting that you hasn’t done much DIY work. I remember last season, you did many stuffs like TV console, cabinets, decorative items that were really nice too! Not trying to say that painting aren’t nice, but it’s a little sad to see you not doing DIY stuffs anymore. Perhaps you can balance it up? I think DIY stuffs are also special in a way. =)
Anyway, JIAYOU!

on November 6th, 2007 at 7:57 pm
Hi. It’s me again, the Jasmine who had commented about you doing too many drawings.
I’m really glad that you have taken some of our opinions and tried to do better design. (: Anyway, just to let you know; I did not mean that you have done too many drawings in session 3 in fact, if you were to watch the previous sessions, you have actually drawn in almost every episodes. Just to let you know. (:
Guess what? My mum just complimented about the drawing you have done this episode. She also insists that I have to let you know. She said that the Buddha was impressively drawn. She also carried on saying: “Only one who draws a portrait of a Buddha with his heart wholeheartedly will make it look as if it’s coming into life. Wang LuJiang has actually done it.” She then ended her compliment with: “I have to admit that it really bores me to see him doing the same thing, drawing, every single episode since the previous two, but he is really very artistic.”
Just to let you know, my mother seldom compliments people. (:
Good luck!
Hope to see a different form of artistic Bryan! (:
Jasmine.

U are SOOO GREAT !!!

U save the WORLD !!! XD
on November 6th, 2007 at 8:37 pm
dear all,
i am really glad that you guys like the buddha drawing i did. Unfortunately the whole process of drawing it, which spans over the three hour time frame we had, cannot be telecasted in detail in this one hour programme. The steps taken to draw the portrait are as follow…
first i did the outline in white over the black surface..then i used “levi” gold paint on the face which i took care not to overlap with the white outline. when the pic is completely covered in gold paint i used a rather fine brush to go over the white outline and after that’s been done, i used aerosol spray paint in gold and black to go over the outlines and created the shading as i don’t have air-brush(and i have never used air brush before la..).. using the white spray in careful portions at areas to create the illuminating reflection of light on the face. hope tat you guys are able to digest this and also thank you for all your lovely compliments… will take a short break from painting to attempt some other forms of diy..bear with me..bear with me…
on November 6th, 2007 at 8:49 pm
the whole place gives off a very ‘zen’ feeling. just like everyone else, love your Buddha drawing! guess deep appreciation for Buddhism art somehow still requires real understanding and faith to e religion itself too, which i think you do.. anyway keep up your good work! (:

Hi Bryan, I think your design for this week’s tv contest is really very good. In fact, I prefer your designs most of the time. You really have a flair for interior design. Could you tell me which shop you got the furnitures for the show this week? I would like to visit the shop. Thanks.
on November 7th, 2007 at 2:59 pm
Hi Bryan!
I am so impressed by your talent for painting! I like to think I am a pretty good artist myself (if I try really really really hard hahaha), but I think I would need 30 hours – and possibly more – before I can complete and fine-tune each of those paintings that you had done for the last two episodes…Marilyn Monroe and the Buddha! But you did it in a mere 3 hours…THREE HOURS!!! And they seemed very polished pieces of work to me…not like they were done in a hurry!
And the Buddha painting is really a fantastic job! It must be way more challenging than the painting of Marilyn Monroe, since the latter is made up of mainly solid blocks of colours, while the Buddha painting needs a lot of careful shading and highlighting. Hahaha, the Buddha could easily be looking bruised instead of bronzed if the shading of the shadows are done wrong (it would if it was left up to me)!
AND the Buddha in your painting has a really serene smile/expression that radiates feel-good vibes! When I was shopping around for a Buddha statue with my mum many years ago, she explained to me that one way to pick out a statue from all that were on display was to find one whose expression made me feel at peace. I understand that the painting is more of a design rather than a reglious feature in this case, but imagine if you somehow did not manage to get the demeanour of the Buddha right, and he ended up with a grim and displeased expression instead…the owners of the flat would feel like they were being watched instead of being watched over!
I like how you had transformed this flat with wall colours and choice of furniture etc, but its your Buddha painting that really blown me away…I especially can’t get over the fact that you did it in a mere THREE HOURS…(and you probably was distracted or disturbed by interruptions now and then too).
Just wondering, if this wasn’t a competition and you had all the time in the world to complete the painting, do you think you would still ended up finishing it in three hours, or would you naturally take your time to do it and ended up taking days?
on November 7th, 2007 at 4:15 pm
The buddha drawing nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I like the decor u did!!!!!!!! You are so much better than Mark. But then not fair to Mark coz he cant draw. haha…
on November 7th, 2007 at 6:54 pm
Hi Bryan
Your past drawings although good were all 2D. This Buddha is WOW, 3D! I thought it was a scanned image. Simply marvellous! Even Debbie Travis can’t draw at all (well, at least not shown on her shows)! And you are so unselfishly shared the method step-by-step to us. Thanks and Congrats!!!

Hihi… bryan, maybe i am rather late to write comments as the show have already over for two days. I think your design is really amazing and cool, if next time i able to have my own house will definitely get you for some opinion. haha!
Actually i am here leaving you comment is not all because of this progamme, is just that i have some problem that needs some idea or opinion from you. Actually i have finally found what i really want in my life? i finally found my own goal/direction but i found that is not easy to accomplish and fulfill in it. Because my goal is actually to design my own clothing with my own creation but before that i have never ever thought of it! Because before that i haven found any things that interest me, but one day i have no idea? Why will i suddenly have so much idea and solution that’s keep coming out from my mind to actually let me have the urged to design my own clothing. But the problem once again, is i am not good in designing, i don’t have interest in drawing before or can say easier my drawing is bad. So i am rather trouble about it! Actually is ok to me not to open a shop because i have never thought of that and i don’t have the budget, but again if i have the chance i can sell online using blog. So i have alot of ideas going through my mind but is just i don’t have an idea, how to start or how can i start it? because i am rather lost in it. but i am really interested in doing it!
hmm… really hope you can give me some advice? if not possible is ok, i will understand. Anyway, take care of yourself bryan.

Hi Bryan! Impressive painting!! Well done! Jia You oh!
on November 8th, 2007 at 4:34 pm
hello bryan,
i’ve only recently found ur cite and knowing that you will read the comments, i want to tell you that you’re one of the ppl that inspired me with your works. i mean 戲劇和主持方面. i’ve watched your shows since young (don’t worry that it makes you sound old, it’s because i’m still a student) and you’re one of the artistes that i admire truly based on your talents.
although you seldom act in shows (nowadays), your previous works, whether in singapore or taiwan/mainland, left a great impression in my mind! i hope in the future i’ll be like you and become an actress, not necessary on screen (because i like theatre too) and not only confined to singapore!
not to mention you’ve got the stuff for interior deco too (:
thanks for inspiring me!
all the way for your future endeavours and take care!

Hey Bryan, what’s the brand of the sling bag that you carried to the shop on the Indochine episode? I got to have it.
on November 8th, 2007 at 9:21 pm
dear serene,
hmm.. not sure i am directing you to the right direction but here’s my two cents worth… first and foremost, it is really great that you have found your calling.. however, you don’t seem to embrace it whole heartedly as you sounded a wee bit unsure… nevertheless, there are actually ways to pursue this dream of yours… Perhaps what you could do is to partner up with some students doing fashion (eg.lasalle) and you can then toss them your ideas and they would probably be able to sketch it out and even sew it! But i think it would be quite an asset for you to attend a course in fashion designing and you could find some of these courses quite easily either in lasalle or nafa.. lots of ppl are doing on line sales now and some are rather successful..so this option is not that unreachable..but, you need to have the end products before you are able to market it..if you have lots of ideas bursting out from you, it would be a wise move to scribble it down..because life is like a jigsaw puzzle, you just have to piece things together for it to work. likewise with all your ideas..perhaps when you see them in black and white rather than fleeting thoughts you might find an answer to your doubts and how to actually form a business out of it. don’t be discouraged by any initial setbacks because these are the lessons that will take you to greater heights… cheers!

if i am not wrong that would be a messenger bag by Gucci…

Watching your Home Decor 3, you’re not only creating different designs but lots of laughter. I think I can only say, “Thank you”. Thank you for your different designs. Thank you for creating lots of laughter for all of us. I believe that’s the reason why WE love you. You deserve it.
Another programme which we’re looking forward to watch is 我的导游是明星. Today, 8 Nov is the first episode of Tasmania’s trip. Do you something… Today, 8 Nov is also my birthday. I, sincerely wanted to THANK YOU for giving me lots of laughter on my birthday. And also thank you for giving me this special birthday present.
Last but not least, wish you good luck (birthday girl’s luck) in Star Awards.
Note: Don’t stress too much by what we say! Just do what you think is the best and right for you.

Anyway, the moment i saw your Buddha mural, i knew for sure you’d win. I was speechless when i saw it; and still am. Singapore definitely needs more artistes like you. You bring hope to the variety shows over here. Are you guys planning to do a season 4? This show, to me, is one the best variety programmes! It rids away my monday blues.

hi bryan, thanks so much for your suggestion and encouragment. Wah, i don’t expect you will really reply my questions. First of all you are right, although i have found what i want in my life, but i know i am struggling and unsure in myself. Because i am a person who will think negatives easily and i am a person who will lack of confident and courage. So when i finally found my goals, i start to think if i am up to standard to make it come true? if i able to handle problems that may occurs? if i going to give up? You know there’s alot of “if” in myself, i know this goals is not easy to accomplish but still the urged of wanting to make it come true is there and is strong. But i know now i won’t give up and i will try my best to do what i can, so just hope that you will give me your blessing? And of course if i need your encouragement or advice, i will definitely come here to “bother” you. Haha… but once again your suggestion and encouragement is really very useful to me, so really thanks so much! Thank you…
